“The sky is the limit” for Gladiators after appointment of Robbie Peers believes SLB commentator

John Hobbs, commentator for the Super League Basketball and basketball journalist that you have already started to see the impact British basketball legend Robbie Peers and his assistant have had on the Caledonia Gladiators side, even before their appointment.  

Earlier this week Peers and Hamilton were formally announced as Gladiators head coach and assistant, in what was a surprising but also impressive appointment. The South Lanarkshire side have been struggling for form so far this season, with the club seeing a big turnover after former head coach Gareth Murray moved onto a higher role at the club and General Manager Sean Skelly stepped down. 

“It is a new era for Caledonia. One that the fans might be a little bit apprehensive about entering but hopefully it will work out well for them. He certainly has the experience with his longtime assistant James Hamilton, who himself is also a British basketball legend. You have started to see some glimpses of positive results in the last few weeks for Caledonia. Hopefully for them, the sky is the limit now and they can rise up the table.” 

Peers is one of the most successful men’s head coaches in British basketball history, winning at every level in the sport’s old set up. Hobbs is convinced the head coach will be determined to succeed at his new club after a period away from the sport: 

“He’s been away from the British basketball scene for a bit, but he will no doubt look to stamp his authority on this Gladiators team and look to get them in good shape, especially heading into the Christmas window”. 

The Gladiators have been struggling for form so far this season, only winning one from their last 5 matches, allbeit with improved performances. They head down south to face the Sheffield Sharks who are in a great run of form winning 4 of their last 5. However, the Scottish side were victorious when the sides last met. Hobbs gave his thoughts going into the game: 

“It will be a tough one. Over the years match ups between the two have always been very physical, bruising encounters. It’s going to be a really fascinating match and one to watch. Mainly, because of how the Gladiators’ players will react to a new coach, a new system, new sets being played. Don’t be surprised if Caledonia are just finding their feet with Robbie Peers at the helm. But at the same time, they could be highly charged and motivated wanting to get that win and start the new era off with a victory and settle the nerves of some Gladiators fans.” 

Robbie Peers will be hoping his side can claim the first victory of his tenure tomorrow night for a platform to build from as we head into the hectic festive season.
