Scotland vs South Africa – Match Preview

In a rematch from last year’s Rugby World Cup opening match, Scotland play host to South Africa this weekend in the Autumn Nations.

After an impressive victory last time out against Fiji, Gregor Townsend and his players will be looking to build on and seal what would be a massive victory for the team against the World Cup holders. 

The Springboks were the number 1 rugby team in the world until a loss to Argentina just over a month ago cost them their 13-month reign at the top of the rankings. 

Unfortunately for the Scots, they will be without Saturday’s 4 time try scorer Darcy Graham due to concussion. This is set to be a huge loss but not one Scotland has not dealt with before, as Graham missed this year’s Six Nations and the Summer Tour. 

Rugby expert Graham Bean from the Scotsman discussed the loss of Darcy Graham for this weekend’s tie: 

“It’s a shame for Darcy himself, he’s had no luck with injuries over the last two seasons. It’s another blow. He will be missed, definitely. You are going to miss anyone who is as prolific as he is.” 

Bean believes that Graham will be replaced by Kyle Rowe to face the Springboks: 

“If he is fit, I think he will play in Graham’s position and Blair Kinghorn will come in at full back. It just depends on if he is going to be okay.” 

Though it is not all doom and gloom as former captain Finn Russell is set to return to the matchday squad. A key man for this Scotland side and will be gunning to help them achieve a memorable victory on Sunday. 

Bean gave his thoughts ahead of the match: 

“It’s hard to see past South Africa, they have won 8 in a row against Scotland. But with home advantage you never know! It is the first game of their tour so might be a little bit not upto speed.” 

Sunday’s match kicks off at 16:10 in front of a full Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium.
